We recommend that you purchase some FRS handheld radios for your family or get licensed to operate a “HAM Radio” . There are even GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) radios that do not require a test, just a license fee (that covers your entire family), GMRS is limited in power-output and frequencies, but has a greater range and interoperability with other local agencies.
I studied for my Technicians license with local “HAMS” and it was not that hard (even for me, with “testing-fear”), and I made it!
I will do what I can to assist if it means you will be better equipped and able to communicate with your neighbors and local agencies during a crisis.
Below are great inexpensive starter “HAM” Radios and FRS Family Radios (No License or Fee’s). Learn how to properly use any radio before needing it during an emergency. You may purchase ANY radio for monitoring purposes only, you only require an FCC license to TRANSMIT on Certain Frequencies and Power Levels.
NOTE: The FCC – Federal Communications Commission says that you do not require a license to “Call for Help” on any radio.
A Disclaimer: These are just Samples, I do not recommend or sponsor any brand or manufacturer. Do your own research and find out what suites you best for your own preferences
